The Naval College of Engineering was “commissioned” on 12 Jul 1957 though it was later formally inaugurated on 02 Jan 1960 by late Shri VK Krishna Menon, the then Defence minister. The name of the college has changed from “Engineering and Electrical College ” to” Naval Engineering College ” to the present name. With the initial sanction of 11 staff, both service and civilian, at the directing level, the college grew in shape and size and today it has a sanctioned strength of 19 officers and 42 scientists for its' faculty.

Training at college commenced with a two and half year course called the Basic Engineering Course (BEC), for training ex-NDA officers as Technical Officers, which was later extended to 3 years. Various other courses such as the Marine Engineering Specialisation Course (MESC), Marine Engineering Introductory Course for Direct Entry Engineering Graduates, Special Duty Marine Engineering Qualifying Course, Special Duty Marine Engineering Post Promotion Course and Scientific Orientation Course for Education Officers were also conducted at college till 1980. The four year 10+2 (Tech) scheme, later rechristened as the Naval Engineering Course (NEC), commenced in 1985. The college today trains technical officers of Engineering and Electrical / Electronics streams of the Indian and friendly foreign Navies and provides them a B Tech degree on completion. With The courses were recognized by the Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1985 for award of B Tech degree.

Presently the 106th BEC and the 25th NEC have already joined the college. So far, 2159 officers including 151 officers from friendly foreign countries have passed out from the portals of the Naval College of Engineering.
