Naval Engineer on top of the World - Lt Cdr Abhishek Kankan : Starting from the depths of the ocean and ending up right on the highest summit in the world, the Indian Naval expedition team became the first Navy team to climb Mount Everest and that too from the most difficult northern side. No Indian Armed Forces team or any Naval team from anywhere in the world has ever attempted Mt Everest from the north, which is by far the most difficult and technically challenging route. The team also became the most successful Indian contingent ever to climb the Everest, overtaking the record of the Indo-Tibetan border police, whose eight-team members had reached the summit in 1998. Led by Commander Satyabrata Dam, the 14-member team comprised of 09 climbing members and 05 base camp support team, which also included an alumni` of the Naval College of Engineering – Lt Cdr Abhishek Kankan. An alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun, he belongs to the fifth batch of the Naval Engineering Course and is also a Marine Commando. He did his basic mountaineering course from HMI, Darjeeling in 2002, where he was adjudged the “Best student” and thereafter he climbed to the summit of Mount Kamet (height-7756m) in his maiden expedition.

Two stanford Professors have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) on Feb 10, i.e Gary H Glover and Cmde(Retd) Arogyaswami J Paulraj . Cmde(Retd) A.J Paulraj, a professor of electrical engineering, was lauded "for contributions to the theory and practise of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) smart antenna wireless technology". This "smart antenna" technology arose out of the pioneering work by Cmde(Retd) A.J Paulraj and his group that began at Stanford in the 1990s and brought about such dramatic improvements that it has since been adopted in several worldwide standards for wireless technologies including WIFI, WIMAX, 3G and 3.5G. Cmde(Retd) A.J Paulraj was the winner of the 2003 Technical Achievement Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Cmde(Retd) A.J Paulraj received his doctorate in 1973 from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi. Before joining Stanford in 1993,he served in the Indian Navy and was assigned to various research and development leadership positions in India including Chief Scientist,Central Research Lab of Bharat Electronics, Director of Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing and Director of the Centre of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. Inaddition to supervising the Smart Antennas Research Group, Cmde(Retd) A.J Paulraj is an advising faculty member in the Stanford Center for Position, Navigation and Time(SCPNT), which aims to advance the Global Positioning System to enhance resolution and reliability in location information. Currently, on part time leave of absence from Stanford, Cmde(Retd) A.J Paulraj is co-founder and CTO of Beceem Communications Inc.Santa Clara,Calif. |
